Introduction

KINHERD was a DFG research project aiming to improve and automatize inversion methods to determine kinematic earthquake source parameters. Work on this project has been done at the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Hamburg, at the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR), and at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ).

Within the scope of KINHERD, the Kiwi Tools were developed, an open source software package which allows fast calculation of synthetic seismograms for extended earthquake sources by using pre-calculated Green’s function databases. These tools can now be used to invert for kinematic earthquake source parameters, moment tensor point sources and as a basis for further developments.
